On Twitter, pope to get different type of followers

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict already has 1.2 billion "followers" in the standard sense of the word but he soon will have another type when he enters what for any 85 year old is the brave new world of Twitter.

Vatican officials say the pontiff, who is known not to love computers and still writes most of his speeches by hand, will have his own handle by the end of the year.

"It will be an officially verified channel," said a Vatican official.

Primarily the tweets will come from the contents of his weekly general audience, Sunday blessings and homilies on major Church holidays. They will also include reaction to major world events, such as natural disasters.

The leader of the world's 1.2 billion or so Roman Catholics will not, of course, write the tweets himself, but he will sign off on them before they are sent in his name.

But even divine intervention might not help squeeze the gist of a papal encyclical, which can run to more than 140 pages, into 140 characters.

Those tweets will probably be limited to a link to a url with the entire document.

The papal handle has not yet been disclosed but it is widely expected to be @BenedictusPPXVI, his name and title in Latin.

The pope has given a qualified blessing to social networking.

In a document issued last year, he said the possibilities of new media and social networks offered "a great opportunity", but warned of the risks of depersonalisation, alienation, self-indulgence, and the dangers of having more virtual friends than real ones.

In 2009, a new Vatican website, www.pope2you.net, went live, offering an application called "The pope meets you on Facebook", and another allowing the faithful to see the pontiff's speeches and messages on their iPhones or iPods.

The Vatican famously got egg on its face in 2009 when it was forced to admit that, if it had surfed the web more, it might have known that a traditionalist bishop whose excommunication was lifted had for years been a Holocaust denier.

Taylor Swift reigns over Billboard 200, Meek Mill debuts high

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Country-pop star Taylor Swift held onto the top spot on the Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday as her latest album "Red" kept rapper Meek Mill from the top spot.

"Red," Swift's fourth studio album safely took the No. 1 position after selling 344,000 copies according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

Last week, "Red" scored the highest first week U.S. sales in a decade after selling 1.2 million copies. The album has outsold One Direction's "Up All Night" to become the second-biggest album of 2012, behind Adele's juggernaut record "21," which has sold more than 4 million copies this year.

Rapper Meek Mill entered the chart at No. 2 with his debut studio album "Dreams & Nightmares," selling 164,000 copies. The rapper collaborated with fellow Maybach Music artists for his debut, including Trey Songz, Wale, Rick Ross and Mary J. Blige.

Ahead of the holiday season, two festive albums debuted on the chart, with veteran crooner Rod Stewart's "Merry Christmas Baby" at No. 3 and Trans-Siberian Orchestra's extended play record "Dreams of Fireflies (On a Christmas Night)" at No. 9.

Country singer Toby Keith landed at No. 6 with his latest album "Hope on the Rocks," following his appearance and best music video win at the County Music Association (CMA) awards last week.

Country group Little Big Town also saw a boost from their CMA vocal group of the year win as their album "Tornado" climbed the chart to No. 10.

Canadian singer Neil Young and his band Crazy Horse scored their second top ten album this year with "Psychedelic Pill" at No. 8, following their "Americana" album in June.

Over on the Digital Songs chart, Korean rapper Psy held the top spot with his infectious dance-pop single "Gangnam Style," while Bruno Mars' "Locked Out of Heaven" remained at No. 2 and Ke$ha's "Die Young" was a non-mover at No. 3.

Look who's talking! Kirstie Alley calls Travolta "greatest love"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Kirstie Alley described on Wednesday how she fell in love more than 20 years ago with John Travolta, and rejected widespread Hollywood speculation that the "Grease" star is secretly gay.

Alley, former star of the 1980s TV comedy "Cheers," told ABC television journalist Barbara Walters that she fell for both Travolta and actor Patrick Swayze in the 1980s, although their romances never got physical.

Alley, 61, said she was attracted to Travolta while the pair were making the 1989 movie "Look Who's Talking," calling him "the greatest love of my life."

"Believe me, it took everything I had inside, outside, whatever, to not run off and marry John and be with John for the rest of my life," Alley told Walters in an interview broadcast on breakfast TV show "Good Morning America."

Asked by Walters to comment on persistent rumors about Travolta's sexuality, she said: "I know John with all my heart and soul. He's not gay."

Alley added: "I think in some weird way, in Hollywood, if someone gets big enough and famous enough, and they're not out doing drugs and they're not womanizing, what do you say about them?"

Travolta was single at the time, but Alley was on her second marriage, so she never pursued her feelings, she explained.

Travolta later married actress Kelly Preston, his wife for the past 20 years. But the actor was the target of two lawsuits earlier this year, which were quickly dropped, from two male masseurs who claimed Travolta made unwanted sexual advances.

Alley, who talks more about her love life in her new book, "The Art of Men," said she fell for Swayze while they were filming the 1985 Civil War TV miniseries "North and South."

"We did fall in love. I was more willing to break up my marriage and I wasn't willing to break up his marriage," Alley said, explaining why the relationship failed to go further.

Swayze, best known for his lead role in "Dirty Dancing," died of pancreatic cancer in 2009 at the age of 57. He was married to dancer Lisa Niemi from 1975 until his death.

Alley has been married twice. Her second marriage, to actor Parker Stevenson, ended in 1997.

Mom of "Modern Family" actress denies abuse claims

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The mother of "Modern Family" star Ariel Winter on Wednesday denied that she abused her daughter after a judge temporarily placed the 14-year-old actress in her sister's care.

"It's all untrue, it's all untrue," Chris Workman, Winter's mother, told People magazine. "I have my doctor's letter that my daughter's never been abused."

According to court papers, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge last month put Winter, who plays the precocious teenager Alex Dunphy on the Emmy-winning TV comedy, under the temporary guardianship of her older sister, Shanelle Gray.

Celebrity website TMZ.com said Winter's mother was alleged to have slapped and emotionally abused the teen, and had been ordered to stay away from her. Ariel has left her mother's home, TMZ said.

Gray will retain guardianship of Winter at least until a November 20 hearing, a judge said.

Winter's publicist did not return calls for comment on Wednesday.

"Modern Family" portrays the lives of three zany families and has won three consecutive Emmy award as American television's best comedy series.

VP Joe Biden guest stars as celebrity crush on "Parks and Rec"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Someone has a big crush on U.S. Vice President Joe Biden - and now she is getting to meet him.

Biden will make his TV acting debut with a cameo on NBC's comedy "Parks and Recreation" as the celebrity crush of actress Amy Poehler's ditzy local councilwoman Leslie Knope, NBC said on Thursday.

Biden, 69, will play himself in the episode "Leslie vs. April," airing November 15, where Knope, a city councilwoman for the fictional small town of Pawnee, Indiana, has a surprise meeting with the vice president in Washington D.C.

Knope has long described her ideal man as having the "brains of George Clooney and the body of Joe Biden."

"Meeting Vice President Biden was a thrill for me and for Leslie," Poehler said in a statement.

"He was a good sport and a great improviser. The vice president maintained his composure while I harassed him and invaded his personal space. The nation of 'Parks and Rec' will be forever grateful," she added.

The scenes with Biden were shot in July in the chambers of the vice president's ceremonial office, during the TV show's recent trip to the nation's capital to film scenes for this season's storylines.

The biggest challenge of landing Biden's cameo was keeping it a secret before Tuesday's U.S. elections. Airing the episode prior to November 6 could have been equivalent to a campaign contribution to advertise a candidate, executive producer Michael Schur told Entertainment Weekly.

"Parks and Recreation" follows the Pawnee Parks department and its tireless deputy Knope, who puts all her efforts into improving her little hometown.

This is a big season for Poehler's character, who is finally elected into city government, gets engaged to campaign advisor Ben Wyatt and meets her political heroes including Senators Barbara Boxer, Olympia Snow and John McCain, who were featured in September's season premiere.

Lagerfeld says Ghesquiere with Arnault "not bad idea"

PARIS (Reuters) - Star designer Karl Lagerfeld said the departure of Nicolas Ghesquiere from Balenciaga as artistic director to create his own brand with backing from LVMH's Bernard Arnault would "not be a bad idea" as the group owned many old labels.

"Perhaps Nicolas wants to have his own label, which is not a bad idea," Lagerfeld told Reuters in an interview on Thursday.

"And it would not be a bad idea if somebody such as Bernard Arnault would invest in a new label because there are so many old labels (within the LVMH group)," Lagerfeld said about the chief executive of the world's biggest luxury group.

PPR, the French group which owns Balenciaga, shocked the fashion world by announcing this week the departure of Ghesquiere, who had been with the brand since 1997 and was the main architect of its revival.

The International Herald Tribune reported this week that one option for Ghesquiere was to create his own brand with the backing of Arnault, who controls LVMH, the world's biggest luxury group, which owns many fashion brands including Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Celine.

Founded by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1919, his eponymous brand thrived until the late 1960s and then lay dormant until Ghesquiere took over as designer. The brand started to expand worldwide after PPR acquired it in 2001.

Balenciaga did not explain Ghesquiere's departure clearly when it made the announcement on Monday but it suggested the designer was longing for a new creative adventure.

Lagerfeld, who runs his own brand on top of working as artistic director for LVMH's Fendi and for privately owned Chanel, said he could not think about the succession.

"We (my team and I) only think in terms of one collection after the next collection," he said. "In fashion, I am very much against projection in the far away future."

Lagerfeld was speaking at the opening of an exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris of his photos of celebrities themed around Chanel's "little black jacket," who were styled by Carine Roitfeld, former editor of the French Vogue.

The celebrities include artist Yoko Ono, John Lennon's widow, film maker Sofia Coppola and actresses Kirsten Dunst and Milla Jojovich.

"I am happy I can do both fashion and photography because there is a link between the two but it is a link which I refuse to analyze," Lagerfeld said.

Also present at the exhibition's opening was Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel's fashion division, who like Lagerfeld would not be drawn too long on the subject of the designer's succession.

"Karl is in great shape, I work every day with him and I can assure you that he is doing very well," Pavlovsky said, adding that relations between Chanel and him had always been excellent.

"Of course one day there will be an after-Karl but Karl will have made Chanel so strong, with such strong codes that Chanel will find solutions," Pavlovsky said.

The executive said Chanel, owned by the Wertheimer family, was doing well overall and expected 2012 to be another "good year" in spite of the global downturn which has affected many of its rivals including LVMH, Burberry and Gucci owner PPR.

However, he said the Chinese market was becoming more mature with growth levels in big cities such as Shanghai or Beijing becoming similar to that of European capitals or New York where Chanel has been for decades.

"We are no longer in the 20-30 percent growth levels we had seen (in previous years in China)," he said. "It can be more than 10 percent," he said, referring to growth levels in big European cities.

Pavlovsky said Chanel planned to finish the year with 10 boutiques in China and 182 globally.

"Dancing" co-host Brooke Burke has thyroid cancer

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Dancing with the Stars" co-host Brooke Burke said on Thursday that she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and will need surgery.

The television presenter and model said in a three-minute video posted on the website Modernmom.com that she will need her thyroid removed.

"I need to have thyroid surgery and a thyroidectomy, which means I'm going to have a nice, big scar right here on neck," Burke said, drawing a finger across her throat.

Burke, a former winner of ABC's celebrity ballroom dancing competition, said she had a biopsy in July, but it had taken her months to go public with the results.

"I'm ready to deal with it, and I'm going to be fine," she said.

There was no word on when the surgery would take place, but Burke's publicist said her work schedule for "Dancing with the Stars" would not be affected.

Burke, 47, said in July that her doctor suggested she undergo a thyroid ultrasound after he felt a lump in her neck during a routine physical.

The thyroid is a gland in the neck that produces hormones that regulate vital body functions, such as heart rate and blood pressure.

Burke's co-host Tom Bergeron said on Thursday during an appearance on the CBS chat show "The Talk" that he had known about her condition for several months. "We are all there with her," he said.

"I've known about this for a few months ... I have had experience with this in my family. You never want to hear the word cancer. But thyroid cancer is one of the most treatable cancers. It has an incredibly high success rate," he said.

Call me JackSUN, says singer Jermaine

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Jackson 5 singer Jermaine Jackson has petitioned to change his name, according to court documents filed earlier this week in Los Angeles.

The older brother of pop stars Michael and Janet Jackson, Jermaine wants to change his famous last name to Jacksun for "artistic reasons."

Asked why Jermaine wanted to change his name, his attorney Bret D. Lewis, who filed the petition on Jackson's behalf, told Reuters "If Prince and P Diddy can do it, why can't and shouldn't Jermaine?"

If all goes to plan, Jackson's name will officially change following a court hearing set for February 22.

Jermaine, 57, and brothers Jackie, Marlon and Tito are currently in Europe on a Unity Tour, under the name The Jacksons, performing hits made famous by the Jackson 5 along with a tribute to their late sibling Michael.

Jermaine Jackson unofficially adopted the name Mohammad Abdul Aziz after converting to Islam in 1989.

Ex-oilman named new leader of world's Anglicans

LONDON (Reuters) - A former oil executive was named leader of the world's 80 million Anglicans on Friday, ending months of closed-door negotiations as the church struggles with bitter rifts over senior women clergy and homosexuality.

Justin Welby, 56, who has been bishop of the northern English city of Durham for barely a year, will replace incumbent Rowan Williams in December.

He is widely regarded as an opponent of gay marriage but in favor of the ordination of women as bishops, two of the most divisive issues facing the Church.

Welby's appointment as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury caps a meteoric rise in the Church of England hierarchy since he quit the oil business world and was ordained in 1992.

The bespectacled and soft-spoken Welby accepted the appointment at London's Lambeth Palace, the official London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury for 800 years.

"My initial reaction was, 'oh no'," a smiling Welby told reporters in a wood-vaulted room adorned with portraits of former archbishops and gold chandeliers.

"It's something I never expected. And the last few weeks have been a rather strange experience, to put it mildly."

The long-awaited appointment, announced by Prime Minister David Cameron's office, follows weeks of intense speculation that a row over whether to choose a reformer or a safe pair of hands had stalled the nomination process.

"Well this is the best kept secret since the last cabinet reshuffle," Welby told an audience that included his wife, five children and a baby grand-daughter, after opening his address with a brief prayer.

"It's exciting because I believe that we are at one of those rare points where the tide of events is turning and the church ... has great opportunities to match its very great but often hidden strength."

Welby - who trained as a priest after the death of his infant daughter in a car crash - is likely to come under intense pressure to prevent the Anglican church tearing itself apart over women bishops and gay rights.

Liberal church leaders in the United States and Britain are at odds with more conservative figures in Africa and elsewhere.

"What the church does here deeply affects the already greatly suffering churches in places ... like Nigeria," Welby said.

Williams once famously warned that his successor would need the "constitution of an ox and the skin of a rhinoceros". Commentators say Welby's experience of tough negotiation and deal-making in business will stand him in good stead.

Chen Guang-who? Chinese official claims ignorance of blind activist

BEIJING (Reuters) - Despite causing a huge diplomatic incident between the world's two largest economies earlier this year, the Chinese official in charge of the hometown of blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng said on Friday that he has no idea who he was.

Chen, one of China's most prominent human rights advocates, slipped away from under the noses of guards and eyes and ears of surveillance equipment around his village home near Linyi in eastern Shandong province in late April.

He then sought refuge at the U.S. embassy in Beijing for six days, embarrassing China and creating an awkward backdrop for U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit which happened to fall at the same time.

But asked on the sidelines of a party congress in Beijing about Chen, Linyi's Communist Party boss Zhang Shaojun deadpanned.

"I've never heard (of him)," Zhang told Reuters, before hurrying away into a closed-door meeting.

In May, Chen told Reuters that an unnamed central government official had promised to investigate accusations that local officials engineered his jailing on false charges and subsequent 19 months of extra-judicial house arrest and abuse.

But Zhang, a portly man with thinning hair, said he knew of no such investigation.

"I've never heard of this matter," he said.

Robbed of his sight as a child, the rural-born Chen taught himself law and drew international attention in 2005 after accusing officials of enforcing late-term abortions and sterilizations.

Following intense negotiations between Chinese and U.S. officials, Chen left the embassy and was allowed to apply for a visa to study abroad. He is currently a visiting fellow at the New York University School of Law.
